مؤرّخ وأستاذ جامعيّ وُلِدَ في النوبة بفلسطين. التحق أبو حسين بالجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت منذ العام 1971 كطالب واستمرّ في التدريس بعد ذلك منذ العام 1982، حين نال درجة الدكتوراه من الجامعة نفسها بعد أن درس على يد الأستاذ الراحل كمال صليبي وكان أحد طلّابه اللامعين. عمل على تاريخ لبنان وتركّزت خبرته على التاريخ السياسيّ والاجتماعيّ لسوريا العثمانيّة، مع التشديد بشكل خاصّ على تاريخ المناطق التي أصبحت تشكّل دولة لبنان الحديث.
كذلك، كان أبو حسين أستاذًا زائرًا في عدد من الجامعات الأميركيّة والعربيّة، وهو مرجع عالميّ في التاريخ العثمانيّ. منحته الجمعيّة التاريخيّة التركيّة سنة 2013 العضويّة الفخريّة لمساهماته في حقل الدراسات العثمانيّة.

A historian and university professor born in the Palestinian village of Nuba, Abu Husayn enrolled as a student at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 1971, also teaching there as of 1982. During that year, he earned his PhD from AUB, as he studied the history of Lebanon as a star student under the supervision of the late [Lebanese historian] Kamal Salibi. His area of focus was the sociopolitical history of Ottoman Syria, with special emphasis on the history of the regions that went on to form the modern state of Lebanon.
A visiting professor in several U.S. and Arab universities, he is regarded as a world-renowned expert in Ottoman history. The Turkish Historical Society granted him honorary membership in 2013 in recognition of his contributions to the field of Ottoman studies.
His in-depth study of the Ottoman Empire archives shed light on several key stages in the history of Lebanon. With his death in Beirut in 2022, he leaves behind a wealth of books and research in English, Arabic, and Turkish on Lebanese, Arab, and Ottoman history.
Historien et professeur d’université originaire du village de Nouba en Palestine, Abu Husayn intègre l’Université américaine de Beyrouth (AUB) en 1971 et y enseigne à partir de 1982. Cette année-là, il obtient son doctorat à l’AUB, où il étudie l’histoire du Liban en tant qu’étudiant vedette sous la supervision du défunt [historien libanais] Kamal Salibi. Son domaine d’intérêt est l’histoire sociopolitique de la Syrie ottomane, avec un accent particulier sur l’histoire des régions qui ont par la suite formé l’État moderne du Liban.
Professeur invité dans plusieurs universités américaines et arabes, il est considéré comme une sommité mondiale de l’histoire ottomane. La Turkish Historical Society lui a accordé en 2013 le titre de membre honoraire en reconnaissance de ses contributions dans le domaine des études ottomanes.
Son travail approfondi sur les archives de l’Empire ottoman a permis de mettre en lumière plusieurs étapes clés de l’histoire du Liban. Décédé à Beyrouth en 2022, il laisse derrière lui une multitude de livres et de recherches en anglais, en arabe et en turc portant sur l’histoire libanaise, arabe et ottomane.
