Born in 1949 in Zgharta (North Lebanon), Jabbour Douaihy was a professor of French literature at the Lebanese University in Tripoli. As a translator and critic for L'Orient littéraire, he was one of the country’s leading cultural figures. From 1995 to 1998, he participated alongside Samir Kassir in the adventure of publishing Lebanon’s French-speaking literary magazine L’Orient-Express. Several of his novels have been translated into French, including Saint Georges regardait ailleurs (2013) and Quartier américain (2015), both published by Actes Sud/L’Orient des Livres.
Douaihy won several prestigious literary prizes, including the 2015 Said Akl Award for his novel Le Quartier américain (The American Quarter), and the 2013 Arabic Literature Prize for Sharid Al-Manazel (The Vagrant), which was shortlisted for the 2012 International Prize for Arabic Fiction. His novel June’s Rain (2006), which was translated into French, Italian, German, and English, made it on the 2008 shortlist for the same prize and was also shortlisted for the Arabic Booker Prize.
Holder of the Saint-Exupéry award for youth books for his 2001 novel L’âme de la forêt (The Spirit of the Forest), originally published in French, he had previously won the University of Arkansas’ Arabic Translation Award for his 1995 novel Autumn Equinox. He died on July 23, 2021.
Jabbour Douaihy est né en 1949, à Zgharta (Liban Nord). Professeur de littérature française à l’Université libanaise de Tripoli, traducteur et critique à L’Orient littéraire, il compte parmi les grands acteurs culturels du pays. De 1995 à 1998, il participe aux côtés de Samir Kassir à l'aventure éditoriale de L'Orient-Express. Plusieurs de ses romans sont déjà traduits en français dont Saint Georges regardait ailleurs (2013) et Quartier américain (2015), tous deux parus aux éditions Actes Sud/L’Orient des Livres.
Douaihy a remporté plusieurs prix littéraires de renom, dont l’édition 2015 du prix Saïd Akl pour son roman Le Quartier américain et le prix de la jeune littérature arabe 2013 pour Sharid Al-Manazel (traduit par Saint Georges regardait ailleurs), également finaliste de l’International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) pour l’année 2012. Son roman Pluie de juin, publié en 2006 et traduit en français, italien, allemand et anglais, avait figuré parmi les finalistes de l’IPAF en 2008 et avait également été sélectionné pour l’édition arabe du célèbre Booker Prize.
Titulaire en 2001 du prix Saint-Exupéry pour la littérature jeunesse pour son roman L’âme de la forêt, initialement publié en langue française, il avait auparavant remporté le prix de la traduction arabe, décerné par l’University of Arkansas, pour son roman Équinoxe d’automne (1995). Douaihy est décédé le 23 juillet 2021.
كاتب وروائي. ولد عام 1949 في زغرتا (لبنان). حاز على إجازة في الأدب الفرنسي من كلية التربية في بيروت وعلى دكتوراه في الأدب المقارن من جامعة باريس الثالثة. أستاذ الأدب الفرنسي في الجامعة اللبنانية. كاتب إفتتاحيات وناقد أدبي في مجلة (L’Orient Express) وفي ملحق (L’Orient littéraire) في بيروت. قام بترجمة عدة مؤلفات أدبية وعامة من الفرنسية إلى العربية.
نال الدويهي عدداً من الجوائز الأدبية المرموقة، منها جائزة سعيد عقل 2015 عن روايته "حيّ الأميركان"، وجائزة الأدب العربي عام 2013 عن روايته "شريد المنازل" التي رشحت أيضاً ضمن "القائمة القصيرة للجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية عام 2012. كذلك وصلت "مطر حزيران" (2006) التي تُرجمت إلى الفرنسية والإيطالية والألمانية والإنكليزية إلى القائمة القصيرة للجائزة نفسها عام 2008، واختيرت ضمن اللائحة القصيرة لجائزة "بوكر" للرواية العربية.
وحصل الدويهي على جائزة "سانت إكزوبيري" الفرنسية لأدب الشباب عن روايته "روح الغابة" التي صدرت بالفرنسية عام 2001. كذلك حازت "اعتدال الخريف" (1995) جائزة أفضل عمل مترجم من جامعة أركنسو في الولايات المتحدة. توفي في 23 تموز 2021.
