Did you know that the USEK Library holds thousands of significant manuscripts, incunables and rare books? Its Conservation and Restoration Center oversees the preservation of these priceless heritage collections.

Today, we are featuring one of the most remarkable manuscripts of the Lebanese Maronite Order (OLM):

The Maronite Evangeliary, 1673

[Qira’at min Al-ānjīl Al -Araba‘a, 1673]

The Maronite Evangeliary, written in Aleppo (Syria) contains a Syriac-Garshuni Gospel of the 17th century (1673, 354 ff, 33 x 23 x 10 cm), including a text in two columns (23 lines per column). The Gospels are divided according to the days and feasts of the Maronite liturgical year.

This manuscript was copied and illuminated by the hand of Deacon Rizk – son of Pierre from the Marc family, the student of Bishop Gibrael (f.351v) – following the request of Bishop Gibrael Al Blouzani for the Monastery of Our Lady of Tamich, Lebanon.

Three miniatures representing the evangelists St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John illuminate this manuscript, and several portals mounted with a cross embellish the beginning of each Gospel.

Throughout the pages, we find several details, filled with decorative Syriac letters, creating sometimes the shape of a cross.

This manuscript still retains its original full-leather binding.
