Born in Qobeiyat to a Maronite family in 1928, Father Michel (Gerges Tannous Gerges Breydy), completed his elementary education at the Carmelite Fathers’ School in Qobeiyat, the Carmelite Seminary in Tripoli, and then at the Saint Anthony Seminary in Karm Saddeh until 1951.
Having obtained a PhD from the University of Salamanca in Spain in 1952, he returned to Karm Saddeh and was ordained to the priesthood in 1953.
Between 1954 and 1957, he went to Rome where he earned a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University.
Between 1958 and 1965, he taught dogmatic theology and liturgy at the Karm Saddeh Seminary and was the promoter of justice at the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Tripoli, as well as a delegate of the Archbishop of Tripoli to the Apostolic nuncio.
In 1980, he established the Institute of Oriental Studies at the German University of Witten/Herdecke founded by his friend Gerhard Kienle.
From 1984 to 1991, Professor Michel Breydy headed the Department of Levantine Studies at the said university. He died in 1994.
Fluent in ten languages, he left behind publications in five languages, encompassing over 60 books, research papers, articles, interpretations, lectures, in addition to numerous manuscripts he helped discover and publish, especially involving the works of Lebanese Orientalists.
In recognition of his efforts to promote Lebanese-German relations, Father Breydy was awarded the Order of Merit (First Grade) by the Lebanese government, as well as a high-ranking distinction by the German Federal Government.
الخوري ميشال (جرجس طنوس جرجس البريدي)، ولد في القبيات سنة 1928 من اسرة مارونية. تلقى دروسه الابتدائية في مدرسة الآباء الكرمليين في القبيات وفي اكليريكيتهم في طرابلس، ثم في اكليريكية مار انطونيوس كرم سده حتى سنة 1951.
حاز على شهادة دكتوراه من جامعة سلمنكا في اسبانيا سنة 1952. عاد الى كرم سده وسيم كاهنا سنة 1953.
بين سنة 1954 و1957 ذهب الى روما والتحق بجامعة لاتران وحاز على دكتوراه في الحق القانوني.
بين سنة 1958-1965 استاذ مادتي اللاهوت العقائدي وعلم الطقوس في اكليريكية كرم سده ومدّعي عام في المحكمة الروحية في طرابلس، ومندوباً لرئيس أساقفة طرابلس لدى القاصد الرسولي.
سنة 1980 أسس معهد للدراسات الشرقية في الجامعة الألمانية التي أنشأها صديقه جيرارد كينلي.
بين 1984 و1991 رأس البروفسور ميشال البريدي قسم الدراسات المشرقية في جامعة ويتن ـ هيردك. توفي سنة 1994.
اتقن عشر لغات ترك مؤلفات في خمس منها. وقد بلغت مؤلفاته ما يزيد على ستين بين كتاب وبحث ومقالة وشروح ومحاضرات وتحقيق مخطوطات كان له الفضل في كشفها ونشرها لاسيما في أعمال المستشرقين اللبنانيين
وتقديراً لجهوده في تعزيز العلاقات اللبنانية ـ الألمانية منحته الحكومة اللبنانية وسام الاستحقاق المذهّب، كذلك منحته حكومة المانيا الاتحادية وساماً رفيعاً
Né à Qobeiyat au sein d’une famille maronite en 1928, Père Michel (Gerges Tannous Gerges Breydy) fait ses études primaires à l’école des Pères Carmes de Qobeiyat, au séminaire carmélite de Tripoli, puis au séminaire Saint-Antoine de Karm Saddeh jusqu’en 1951.
Ayant obtenu un doctorat de l’Université de Salamanque en Espagne en 1952, il retourne à Karm Saddeh et est ordonné prêtre en 1953.
Entre 1954 et 1957, il se rend à Rome où il obtient un doctorat en droit canonique de l’Université Pontificale du Latran.
Entre 1958 et 1965, il enseigne la théologie dogmatique et la liturgie au séminaire de Karm Saddeh et occupe le poste de promoteur de justice au tribunal ecclésiastique de Tripoli, ainsi que celui de délégué de l’archevêque de Tripoli auprès du Nonce apostolique.
En 1980, il crée l’Institut d'études orientales à l’Université allemande de Witten/Herdecke, fondée par son ami Gerhard Kienle. De 1984 à 1991, Professeur Michel Breydy dirige le département d’études levantines au sein de ladite université.
Parlant couramment dix langues, il laisse derrière lui après sa mort en 1994 des publications en cinq langues, dont plus de 60 livres, travaux de recherche, articles, commentaires et conférences, ainsi que de nombreux manuscrits qu’il a contribué à découvrir et à publier, notamment des œuvres d’orientalistes libanais.
En reconnaissance de ses efforts en faveur de la promotion des relations libano-allemandes, Père Breydy a reçu l’Ordre du Mérite (premier grade) décerné par le gouvernement libanais et une distinction honorifique remise par le gouvernement fédéral allemand.
