Born in Bejjeh – District of Jbeil on January 19, 1928, Michel Hayek went to the Jesuits’ Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, before continuing his higher education at the Institut Catholique of Paris.
Following his ordination to the priesthood on May 17, 1954 at the Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes Church in Paris, he went on to earn a PhD in Theology, Liturgy, Letters and Sociopolitical Sciences and taught at the Institut Catholique of Paris from 1957 to 1993, as well as at the Lebanese University in Beirut and the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK).
Father Hayek took part in the Second Vatican Council (1961-1965) as a theological advisor. As of 1972, he headed, in Lebanon’s name, several delegations to conferences abroad, such as the Lebanese delegation to the Islamic Conference in Algeria.
Between 1965 and 2004, he delivered sermons at the Saint George Maronite Cathedral in Beirut during Lent and in 1983, he was appointed director of the international Catholic review Communio, published in Arabic under the title Al-Liqa’.
He died on Thursday, September 1, 2005.
Father Michel Hayek was a true man of the Church, probably one of its most talented, educated, and cultured minds. In addition to his many talents, he was a polyglot known for his broad culture and prolificity. As a writer who tackled history, philosophy, theology, liturgy, literature, poetry, and anthropology among others, he left behind a rich collection of books, articles, studies, research, and poetry, some of which were published while others remain unpublished.
ولد ميشال حايك في بلدة بجّه - قضاء جبيل في 19 كانون الثاني 1928. التحق بجامعة القديس يوسف للآباء اليسوعيين- بيروت، وبعدها بالمعهد الكاثوليكي – باريس، حيث حصّل دروسه الجامعية.
في 17 ايّار عام 1954، سيم كاهنا، في كنيسة مار يوسف للأباء الكرمليين في باريس حيث نال الدكتوراه في اللاهوت والليتورجيا، والآداب والعلوم الاجتماعية-السياسية، علّم في المعهد الكاثوليكي – باريس منذ سنة 1957 وحتى سنة 1993. كما علّم في الجامعة اللبنانية – بيروت، وفي جامعة الروح القدس-الكسليك.
شارك في المجتمع الفاتيكاني الثاني (1961-1965) بصفة مستشار لاهوتي. ومنذ سنة 1972 ترأس، بأسم لبنان، بعثات عديدة الى مؤتمرات في الخارج، منها البعثة اللبنانية الى المؤتمر الإسلامي في الجزائر وغيرها.
بين عامي 1965 و2004 ألقى ميشال حايك العظات من على منبر كاتدرائية القدّيس جرجس المارونية في بيروت، وذلك بمناسبة الصوم الكبير. وفي عام 1983 عيّن مديرا للمجلّة الكاثوليكية العالمية الصّادرة باللغة العربية تحت اسم اللقاء. Communio
توفّي ميشال حايك يوم الخميس الاوّل من ايلول 2005.
إنه رجل كنيسة بامتياز، لا بل كان من اكثر رجالاتها نبوغا وعلما وثقافة. متعدد المواهب، واسع الثقافة غزير الإنتاج. ويتقن الى هذا، العديد من اللّغات. كتب في التاريخ والفلسفة واللاهوت والليتورجيا والادب والشعر والانتروبولوجيا وغيرها. ترك مجموعة كبيرة من الكتب والمقالات والدراسات والأبحاث والأشعار، بعضها منشور وبعضها الآخر لم ينشر.
