Born Youwakim Moubarak in the North Lebanon town of Kfarsghab in 1924, he took up the religious name of Youssef Estephan. Having studied Arabic, French, and Syriac at his hometown school, he continued his secondary and higher education at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut. Following a PhD in Theology (1958) and another PhD (Doctorat d’État) in Literature (1972) in Paris, he became a university instructor in Paris, Leuven (Belgium), and Balamand (Lebanon). A disciple of Louis Massignon, he became his close assistant in his intellectual and spiritual endeavors and oversaw the publication of his works.
Besides authoring many books in French, he translated a few books from Arabic into French and published or helped publish several serials and periodicals. In addition to his involvement in higher education, he served as a vicar at the Saint-Séverin parish in Paris and took an interest in its mission within the city’s Quartier Latin neighborhood, as well as in its cultural activities and publications.
Father Youwakim Moubarak participated in several regional and international seminars and conferences on scientific matters pertaining to the Christian-Muslim dialogue, Jerusalem, and Palestine. He died in France on May 24, 1995.
ولد يواكيم (في الكهنوت يوسف اسطفان) مبارك في بلدة كفرصغاب – شمالي لبنان 1924. درس العربية والفرنسية والسريانية في مدرسة الضيعة. تابع تحصيله العلمي الثانوي والعالي في كلية القديس يوسف – بيروت. في باريس نال شهادة دكتوراه في اللاهوت 1958 ودكتوراه دولة في الاداب 1972
استاذ جامعي في باريس ولوفان (بلجيكا) والبلمند (لبنان). تتلمذ على يد معلمه لويس ماسينيون، ثم اصبح معاونه المقرّب في نطاق نشاطاته الفكرية والروحية، واشرف على نشر اعماله
صاحب مؤلفات متعددة باللغة الفرنسية. ترجم بعض الكتب من العربية الى الفرنسية. اصدر واسهم في اصدار عدّة مجموعات ونشرات دورية. الى جانب اعماله الجامعية، خدم كاهنا مساعدا، في رعية سان سيفران بباريس واهتمّ برسالتها في الحيّ اللاتيني وبنشاطها الثقافي وبمنشوراتها. شارك في ندوات ومؤتمرات اقليمية ودولية، كلها تبحث في الشؤون العلمية المتعلقة بالحوار الاسلامي وبقضايا القدس وفلسطين. توفي يواكيم مبارك في فرنسا في 24 ايار 1995
